Types of Tea: Six Main Categories of Tea in the World

People from different parts of the world prefer different varieties of tea. In England, the locals prefer black tea, whereas, in India, the locals prefer tea with milk.

Black Tea:

Earl Grey is the most popular type of black tea. Western people also consume this tea. In India, people use this type of tea and add milk to it while drinking. More than 85% of teal lovers drink this type of tea. It has many health benefits. Thus, the difference between black and green tea is actually in the degree of fermentation, ie oxidation. In black tea, this process is completed, which is why it has a dark color, sometimes tea and reddish. The taste of black tea is specific because it is formed from fermenting juices full of aroma, which are retained in the leaf when dried, while they are released only when immersed in hot water. In Western countries, all fermented teas are considered black tea, while in China, black teas are those that have an extremely bitter taste.

The biggest difference between green and black tea is in the amount of caffeine they have. The longer the fermentation of the tea, the greater the amount of caffeine in it. This is exactly the reason why many opt for black tea instead of coffee when they need caffeine. The caffeine found in black tea affects the cerebral cortex, thanks to which we better understand things and connect thoughts faster. With the help of caffeine in black tea, it is easier to learn, remember, communicate, while the feeling of fatigue and drowsiness is reduced. In addition to helping to perform intellectual activities, caffeine in black tea affects muscle work and reflexes, which is especially important for athletes and people who (for example because of work) are quick reactions. According to research conducted, people who drink black tea have a twice lower risk of developing coronary heart disease (heart disease), because the antioxidants and flavonoids from black tea increase the elasticity of blood vessels, which improves blood flow. In addition, black tea lowers cholesterol levels, which reduces the risk of blood clots. Black tea is most effective when consumed without any additives. However, for all those for whom the taste of black tea is too strong, I can soften it with a sugar cube or a spoonful of honey. Black tea is often consumed with milk and sugar, but this is completely wrong, because milk is rich in proteins and sugar in carbohydrates, which – in larger quantities – can burden the digestive organs, and the liver in particular. Cortisol, a stress hormone, is reduced thanks to black tea, so black tea is the best beverage for people who are exposed to stress on a daily basis. Black tea cannot prevent stress, but it can very effectively help a person recover from stress as quickly as possible.

Green Tea:

It is another popular category of tea. It is unoxidized tea. As soon as the collector picks the leaves, they are heated to prevent oxidation. Because of this reason, there are many health benefits of green tea. It has anti-oxidant properties. It is green in colour. You can use the grass to prepare tea. You can also add sweetener or lemon for taste.

White Tea

This is unprocessed tea. Unlike other tea leaves, it is white in colour. The tea collector only picks the closed buds and young leaves. It is then left for drying. The colour of this tea is very light. It has a mild aroma and flavour. It is good for health as there are less caffeine and more anti-oxidants. You don’t need to add anything while preparing the tea.

Oolong Tea:

This tea is lea oxidized compared to black tea. Once the leaves are broken, they let it sit for a few hours. After that, they heat it to lock the anti-oxidants. Oxidation affects the flavour of the tea. It is why black tea tastes better than green tea. When you prepare this tea, it forms a golden brown colour. The flavour of this tea is very delicate and mild. If you want a mix of black tea and green tea, go for this category.

Pu-erh Tea:

It is a special tea from China. It is produced in Yunan province. The flavour of this tea is earthy and different from others. It is grown on wild trees. Sometimes they add coffee beans in the tea to give it a coffee-like flavour.

Yellow Tea:

It is a luxury Chinese tea. It is quite similar to green tea, but the colour is yellow instead of green. They wrap the tea leaves in clothes and let it oxidize and turn yellow. 

These are the six categories of tea you will find in the world. Out of all the categories, the most popular is black tea and least popular in white tea.
